Organic bananas exported by Peru representing around 3% of world organic banana production. In 2019, production occupied around 5 500 ha, about 4% of the total banana production area. This was concentrated in the northern regions of Piura, Tumbes and Lambayeque, and was produced mainly by smallholders with farms of less than three hectares. Since the country began converting from conventional to organic in the late 1990s, more than 80% has been concentrated in the Chira Valley in Piura.
In Peru between 2017 and 2020, organic banana production increased by 94%.
5% of the bananas produced in Peru are exported by about 7,000 small farmers.
Between 2019 and 2020, exports increased by 19%, reaching US $ 143 million and close to 190,000 tons3.
Peruvian bananas are exported to 15 countries. The most important destinations are the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, South Korea, Finland and Japan.
